January 16, 2012– Moses Lake, Washington. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake recently presented Roy & Judy Warnick with the Golden Hammer Award.

The Golden Hammer Award is presented by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake to individuals & businesses that have shown their support to Habitat’s mission of “putting keys to homes in the hands of those in need.”

The Warnicks have donated Christmas trees to Habitat’s annual Festival of Trees for 17 years years. Roy Warnick’s mother, Betty Warnick an sister, Mitja Stansfield, were part of the first Festival of Trees back in 1994. At that time it was held in conjunction with the Catholic Charities organization. Judy Warnick says, “We asked my uncle, Victor Dietz, about purchasing trees from his Christmas tree farm in Greenbluff, Washington. He felt both organizations were worthy of support and has given us a “cut rate” on the trees ever since.”

(left to right) Don Key, Larry Dennis, Roy & Judy Warnick, Sally Voight, Jeremy Boetger and Carolyn Grant, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake Board Members present the Golden Hammer Award.

The dozen or so Christmas trees, donated by the Warnicks, for the event come from Dietz Christmas Tree Farm which is still located near Greenbluff, Washington in the foothills of Mount Spokane. The farm is owned by Judy Warnick’s aunt and Uncle Victor and Marguerite Dietz and her cousin Jim Dietz co-own and manage the tree farm with a number of varieties of trees available for cutting.

Judy says, “Our family is proud to be part of the Habitat for Humanity’s efforts to help families in need. When we see the happiness and joy of families who are able to move into their own homes, we feel that the adage of “helping those who help themselves” is being lived out in our community. We have a great respect for the Habitat for Humanity organization and are honored to be a small part of the Moses Lake projects.”

Don Key, Co-President of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake, says, “It may sound a bit funny, but in Moses Lake, all of our Habitat homes are built from trees. More precisely, Christmas trees. For years, the annual Festival of Trees has been our sole fundraiser to build homes in the Moses Lake area. Each year, various groups and individuals donate their time and artistry to decorate and donate gorgeous Christmas trees for the event. It all begins with the trees themselves. Wonderful trees that we have been blessed with year after year thanks to the continuing giving spirit of Roy, Judy and their family on the Dietz Tree Farm. The best gifts are those that make great memories for a lifetime. Their continuing gifts of Christmas trees help make great lifetimes and we cannot thank them enough.”

Businesses and groups decorated 10 trees at Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake’s 17th annual Festival of Trees.

About 150 people gathered at the Big Bend Community College building to help raise money for the organization.

“This is a very good turn out especially in light of economic times,” said Don Key, the organization’s co-chair president. “I’m amazed by the amount of giving from the members of the community because you can look around you and almost all of the items that are auctioned have been donated by individuals and groups.”

The group is working to finish its 11th home for a disabled father and his daughter. Key was hoping to raise about $30,000 from the event, he said.

“We are really pushing the pedal to the floor trying to get our 11th home complete for the family to move in by Christmas,” he said. “We hope to raise enough to build a new home … We are hoping to get a (restoration project) going within the next year or two years.”

The group has been building homes at a rate of a home per year or year and a half, Key said. The directors are hoping to increase the number to two a year.

“If we can make this one by Christmas that will be two homes in one year, and we want to use two homes in one year as a baseline and grow from there,” he said.

Groups and businesses decorated the trees according to various themes, including one decorated in black and white based on “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Another was decorated by the Third and Alder Salon, and with the theme of “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”

“(The tree) is covered with the twelve days of hair care, so there’s 12 of these things, 11 of these things,” he said. “The Lioness’ are represented, they have a tree covered with different fishing and bait ideas. We have a coffee tree in the corner with quite a bit of different types of coffee items.”

Key pointed out a tree decorated by the Moses Lake Business Association, which had gifts representing different aspects of Moses Lake.

The live trees were donated by Roy Warnick and state Rep. Judy Warnick, R-Moses Lake, who received the Golden Hammer Award for their service to the organization.

Roy Warnick said they became involved in the group because his mother was a Catholic family child service board member when they joined with Habitat for Humanity in the first festival.

“Then my sister … she wanted to be involved and so she decorated a tree for that first Festival of Trees, and that’s when I first heard about it,” he said. “Then another factor was that my wife’s uncle had an awesome Christmas tree farm … it was a mutual decision that this would be a great way to get involved with a good, humanitarian, local project.”

They’ve been providing the trees since, and doesn’t see stopping, he said.

“We got involved because of family, and that’s what this is all about,” Judy said. “The reason that I have stuck with habitat and my aunt and uncle and now my cousin has stuck with habitat for so many years is because it’s all about the kids. Giving kids a place to live.”

She pointed out the people moving into the homes are pulling themselves up.

The people moving into the homes pay the organization back for the cost, and help work on building the house.

“Both of us have jobs where we see people who are really hurting financially, hurting in their lives, and to know that habitat can help those hurting people find a safe place and obtain a safe home is very meaningful to us,” she said.

September 23, 2011

It’s time once again for the Festival of Trees Auction, always an annual tradition the Saturday following Thanksgiving. This annual fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake is celebrating 17 years. Mark your calendar for Saturday, November 26th, 2011. The festivities start at 5:30 pm with registration, the silent auction, social hour and hors d’oeuvres. There will be a short presentation followed by the live auction starting at 8 pm.

The event held, at the Big Bend Community College’s ATEC building, features a dinner as well as a silent & live auction which will feature at least 12 beautifully decorated trees, with most having gifts beneath or hidden within the branches. All proceeds from this event go towards Habitat’s mission of eliminating substandard housing in our community. All Habitat for Humanity homes are sold to the selected families at a no-profit, financed with no-interest loan and each family must invest upwards of 450 hours of sweat equity into the building of their home. This is a hand up and not a hand out program.

Donations are being sought for the Festival of Trees, items for both the live and silent auctions are needed as well as individuals or businesses to decorate trees. This year Habitat is selling sponsorships and will be placing advertising from these sponsors in the printed program. Sponsorship packages range from $1000 for a full-page ad down to $125 for an 1/8 page ad. The success of the fundraiser depends on the generosity of individuals and businesses in our community. Show your support for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake by calling 509-765-4030 for tickets to the event, for a sponsorship package, to donate items for the auction or to make a monetary donation towards the new home.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake is in the process of building their 11th home for a single father and his daughter.

October 14, 2011 – Moses Lake, Washington. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake continues to donate produce to the Community Services of Moses Lake, the local food bank, and to date more than 1200 pounds of produce has been donated.

Habitat for Humanity has been so fortunate for all the volunteers that have stepped up to make this project such a success. Elders and members of the LDS Church, LDS Women’s Relief Society who had a work party, Miriam Grigg, Cynthia Swan, Don Key, as well as SkillSource and Key Club students and so many others. Sally Voight said, “I’m grateful for everyone who’s come forward, we have such a giving community.”

The garden plots are located on a lot located across the street from the Grant Co. Sheriff’s substation on Lowry Street in the Larson subdivision out on the base. The inception of the garden plots began in March 2008 as a result of the Washington State Health District trying to build healthy living in communities. The Grant County Health District contacted John Poling, Director of the Housing Authority and a lot was chosen for what began as the North Community Gardens. The Health District grant money purchased a shed, gardening tools, and the large sign signifying the lot as a community garden. The Housing Authority maintenance personnel constructed the raised garden beds out of a synthetic railroad tie. In the first two years (2008 and 2009), the 32 plots ranging in various square footage were rented out by local individuals. Job Corps built a bench and picnic table, and in 2009 rented half of the plots and grew potatoes.

In 2010, the gardens were tended by Sally Voight, a Habitat for Humanity board member, and the produce was given to the local community. The Housing Authority provided access to the shed, water and weed pickup.

In 2011, Habitat for Humanity purchased the lot from the Housing Authority and will be building a home for a deserving family in the future. Since the garden plots were prepped from the prior year, Habitat has undertaken growing produce and donating all fruits and vegetables grown to the food bank. The utilization of 1,412 square feet of plot space holds such produce as tomatoes, potatoes, corn, peas, beans, zucchini, onions, cucumbers, peppers, radishes, squash, cantaloupe and watermelon.

The Giving Gardens was blessed with donations of tomato plants from Lowe’s, peppers from Home Depot, and a $25 gift card from Wal-Mart, which was used to purchase additional dirt and seeds. The maintenance of the plots is conducted solely through the selfless giving of local volunteers through Habitat for Humanity.

Peny Archer, Operations Manager of Community Services of Moses Lake (Food Bank) stated, “We service up to 2,400 families month and most of the low income recipients of services tend to live in rentals and apartments, where there is not an option for a garden. The fresh fruit and vegetables from the Giving Gardens are a much appreciated luxury!”

Volunteer Kelly Rackham said, “We are very fortunate to live in a community that has so many caring people who are willing to donate their time and skills to help provide for its residents. Our church members have really enjoyed helping Habitat for Humanity and its Giving Gardens Project this summer and especially appreciate the opportunity to have helped enrich the lives of our community’s friends, neighbors, and their families.”

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake in the process of building their 11th home for a deserving family and plans for a second Habitat home are underway. If you are interested in helping with any aspects of building or any number of volunteer opportunities you can sign up on their website at www.habitatmoseslake.org.

May 22, 2011 – Moses Lake, Washington. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake held a home dedication on Sunday, May 22 to celebrate the completion of their 10th home in the Moses Lake community and to officially hand over the keys to Rick, his wife Liz and their four children.

Building a home takes many hours of work, Habitat for Humanity calls it sweat equity. The future homeowner is required to have a part in the building of the home, to some owners they take pride in what the home symbolized for their family. This was definitely the case when it came to Rick and Liz and providing a brand new home for their family. During the ceremony the family was able to give thanks to the many volunteers, including many members of their extended family, friends and community members and local businesses that contributed to their family’s home. Rick gave an emotional and heartfelt thank you for making it all possible.

New homeowner Rick said, “I can’t thank you enough for everything, this home means so much to me and my family. There are just too many people to thank so I’m saying thanks to everyone.”

Curt McFarland, Co-President of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake said, “Our local Habitat for Humanity affiliate is deeply grateful to the community for making it possible for another family to make a house their home. This is Habitat’s tenth local home build. It is our privilege to work with so many others in offering a practical expression of the love of Jesus to this family and to our community.”

Don Key, Co-President of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake said, “I am amazed as to what has happened with this home. Contractors, building professionals, community organizations, and especially friends and family of the homeowners have all stepped forward to make this dream come true for Rick, Liz and their children. Rick, the new homeowner, has had experience in home construction. While each prospective Habitat for Humanity homeowner is required to put in at least 450 hours of “sweat equity” into the building of their home, Rick has gone far and above that requirement. Rick wanted a home for his wife and children and did not stop at putting in thousands of hours to make that happen. Whether it was 100 degrees with no air conditioning in the unfinished house or whether it was blowing snow in early December, Rick was there. When you look up “sweat equity” in the Habitat for Humanity dictionary, Rick’s photo will be there.”

The local Moses Lake Grocery Outlet was just one of many to make donations to the cause. Kris Emerson, owner of the Moses Lake Grocery Outlet said, “We support Habitat homes because our donations and the donations of our customers go to support local families. These families, as you know, had to do sweat equity for their homes as well as pay back the loan on the new home. We love the fact that Habitat for Humanity is a hand up and not a hand out. Being able to help these families get of of less than ideal situations and into their own homes is a great thing. We truly enjoy being a part of the Festival of Trees event as well as dedication of the new home. Knowing that everything stays local is just icing on the cake.” Grocery Outlet generously stocks the cabinets throughout the home with food and supplies for the family.

November 27, 2010 – Moses Lake, Washington. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake held its annual Festival of Trees on November 27th at the ATEC Building at Big Bend Community College. This was the 16th Festival of Trees that was put on by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake. The event was sponsored this year by Strategies and Processes For Construction. Social hour with hors d’oeuvres and silent auction items kicked things off for the evening.

Next was a welcome from Carolyn Grant, President of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake, and a dinner prayer by Don Key, Vice President of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake.

During Carolyn’s welcome she thanked long-time board members Elroy & Mary Ellen Teterud who will be retiring from their position at the end of the year. Mary Ellen spent most of her time maintaining the non-profit’s finances as the Treasurer and Elroy was a Past Treasurer. Both were given a Golden Hammer pin for their dedication to Habitat.

The dinner and live auction, run by Chuck Yarbro and family and MCee’d by Bob Trask, followed the prayer. By the time the evening was done, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake was able to raise $57,000 to put towards “Putting keys to homes in the hands of those in need.”

Curtis Robillard, Festival of Trees committee member and board member, said “I am proud that we were able to raise enough money to pay for house eleven and of the community’s support of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake.”

Larry Dennis, Festival of Trees committee member and board members said, “The auction was a huge success. This year we included for the first time three raffle items, a queen sized quilt, a navigation system, and a bar-b-que setup complete with beverages and meat. Also, encouraging was the number of new faces attending. Special thanks to the community for their continued support in providing deserving families the opportunity to be a home owner.”

Habitat For Humanity is a non-profit non-denominational Christian organization dedicated to eliminating poverty and homelessness. They build simple, decent, affordable houses with help from the community and the new homeowner and for their family. Homes are built from volunteer labor, private donations, and hundreds of hours of “sweat equity” by each partner family. The homes are sold to the partner families at a no-profit and no-interest mortgage. The homeowner’s monthly mortgage payments go into a revolving fund that is used to build more houses. Habitat is not a giveaway program. It is a hand-up not a handout program. In addition to a down
payment and monthly mortgage payment, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor (sweat equity) into their Habitat house and the houses of others. Habitat houses are affordable for low-income families because there is no profit included in the sale price. The mortgage length varies from seven to thirty years.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake is finishing up the building of their 10th home for a deserving family and will begin their 11th home this fall. If you are interested in helping with any aspects of building or any number of volunteer opportunities you can sign up on their website at www.habitatmoseslake.org. Many opportunities are available including construction, being a committee member, joining the board of directors, helping with the annual Festival of Trees fundraiser and more.
